FiberTower Announces Millimeter Wave Spectrum Technology Laboratory

Testing advanced multipoint and non-line of sight wireless backhaul and next generation 5G mobile access technologies

SAN FRANCISCO: January 27, 2014— FiberTower Corporation, a privately held spectrum services provider and holder of one of the nation’s largest spectrum portfolios of market-based 24 GHz and 39 GHz licenses, announced today that it opened a millimeter wave spectrum technology laboratory in Silver Spring, Maryland.

The laboratory is designed to continue FiberTower’s market leading research and development in the wide-area licensed millimeter wave bands, and is especially focused on the revolutionary small cell backhaul and 5G mobile access technologies that are emerging in these bands.  Millimeter wave bands have been identified as a key spectrum tool for the emerging $1 Trillion global 5G industry.  Importantly, these bands are key to current 4G and LTE small infrastructure proliferation, and due to their low-latency and high spectrum re-use capabilities, such millimeter wave enabled sites will be the core infrastructure sites from which 5G operations will be deployed. Specific targeted research areas for the lab include, but are not limited to, small cell backhaul, point-to-multipoint advancements, Gig-Scale™ technologies, and mobile and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) uses for 4G transport and 5G advanced mobile deployments.

With one of the nation’s largest spectrum portfolios of market-based 24 GHz and 39 GHz licenses, FiberTower is positioned to introduce further innovations in these bands, which are ideal for high-capacity mobile broadband access, as well as backhaul and transport for small cell and traditional networks.  FiberTower’s 24 GHz and 39 GHz spectrum licenses and associated equipment and deployment technology, delivers the coverage, capacity and quality that carriers, enterprises and government agencies need to handle rapidly rising broadband data demand from their clients.
